5 Ways How Ceiling Fan Can Save You Energy
Want to install ceiling fan?
You may have known that wasting energy is wasting money.
Fortunately, there are many proven ways to save your energy
consumption. Using ceiling fan is one of the proven ways to
reduce energy consumption but please keep in mind that you
can get all the benefits of using ceiling fan only if you
use it the right way. The followings are 5 ways how ceiling
fan can save your energy.
Quality ceiling fan matters
Do not follow others' suggestion to buy cheap fans because
cheap fans can only last for a few months and they usually
consume more electricity. If you want to use ceiling fan as
a tool to save energy, you should buy quality fan because it
can last for years. The average cost for a quality fan is
between $50 to more than $200 depending on the features and
styles that come with it.
Buy an energy-star fan
Similar to other appliances, there are also fans that are
energy-star certified. One energy-star fan can help to
reduce your electricity bill up to $15 per year. If you use
five or more fans in your home then you can see a
significant reduction in your electricity bill. Search on
the web because online retailers usually provide more
choices on energy-star fans.
Get the right fan size
One of common mistakes made by homeowners when buying
ceiling fan is that they buy a fan that is either too small
or too large for the room. Knowing the right fan size is
essential if you want to optimize your fan use. In general,
for a 75 sq ft room or smaller, you should use a 29-36
inches fan. A 36-42 inches fan is appropriate for 76-144 sq
ft rooms. If your home has a room that is 145-225 sq ft, you
should use a 44 inches fan.
Set the right fan direction based on the seasons
The direction of your ceiling fan is one of the keys that
make the difference in how the fan helps to cool/warm your
room. Fortunately, today's ceiling fans are equipped with a
setting that enables you to change the direction of the fan
based on the seasons.
During the summer months, you should set your fan to spin
counterclockwise. This setting will make the fan to move air
down and provide a breeze to the area underneath the fan.
During the winter months, you should set your fan to spin
clockwise. This setting will make the fan to move air
upwards and force the warm air around the ceiling to go down
towards the floor.
Adjust your thermostat setting
Once you have installed the fan, the next thing to do is to
adjust the setting of your thermostat. During the hot summer
months, it is highly recommended to increase the thermostat
setting up to 5 degrees. In this way, you can delay the
operation of your air conditioner, which eventually reduces
electricity consumption.
One important thing to keep in mind is that fan is intended
to cool people, not air. Therefore, you have to make sure
that your fan is on only when there are people in the room.
If you left the fan on when there is no one in the room, the
only result that you will get is an increase in your
electricity bill.
Lastly, follow all the tips mentioned above and you will see
a decrease in your energy consumption while maintaining a
comfortable indoor environment. |
