7 Useful Tips On
Improving The Airflow Of Ceiling Fan
|
Ceiling fans have a major function in lowering the
temperatures of your room to give you comfort during times
of warm weather. In addition, this appliance can be a
decorative element while hanging from your ceiling. To
obtain maximum efficiency, go for designs that have the
potential to cool the room while ensuring that energy
consumption is at a minimum. In addition, the size of the
fan blade will determine how powerful and effective your fan
is. Always go for fans with a long blade that can cover a
wide area as wide revolutions have a fast cooling effect.
Below are tips on improving the airflow of your fan.
1. Manipulate the switch
You will find a switch situated atop the housing of the
ceiling’s motor. When it is hot, your fan’s blades will move
counter clockwise. Supposing you have air conditioning, you
can vary the thermostat setting to 5 degrees or more without
compromising on the level of comfort experienced. During
relatively warm weather, you do not have to use the air
conditioning as long as your ceiling is working fine. When
it is cold, blades will turn clockwise. Set up your fan to
rotate clockwise on a slow mode. This action creates a warm
draft that then circulates around the room.
2. A fan for each room
One ceiling fan is obviously not enough to fulfil all your
warming needs. While this could seem costly, the truth is
that to manage the internal temperature of your home, you
need several fans complementing each other’s flow of air. If
you do not, the warmth in one room is negated by the cold in
the others. This is not to say that you need an additional
fan for each of your rooms. On the contrary, you only need
fans for rooms that come into regular use. Doing this will
not only increase your comfort during the warm season, but
will also enable you to reduce your consumption of energy.
3. Space considerations
Place the fan in the right space. You should use the blade
span to measure the efficiency of the fan you are using.
Divide your fans into those for the smaller rooms and those
for large areas. For example, a 29-inch blade span may be
great for bathrooms and hallways. However, the same size
will not be good enough to improve the airflow of your
sitting room or the guest end of your home. Keep in mind
that the larger your room, the larger the size of the blade
that will be needed to push air around efficiently.
4. Distance from the floor
For the best circulation of air, keep your ceiling fan at
least six feet from the floor. At the same time, strike a
balance in such a way that you close the distance between
the fan and the ceiling to around 8 inches to give it the
correct wriggle room to gather air around it in as much
volume as possible in order to cool it and re-circulate it.
Sloping ceilings work best with different types of fans as
the movement of air from one point to the next becomes
easier. Controlling the slope will help you achieve the best
effect.
5. Adjust the Angle of the blade
The blade pitch refers to the angle lean of your ceiling fan
blades as they move through the air. Control the angle of
the movement such that there is a pitch balance. Flat
pitches ensure that the blade does not encounter too much
resistance as it moves through the air .However, the problem
with a pitch that is too flat is that the fan will move
slowly and loudly and may even wobble. A steep angle works
in such a way that the revolutions take some effort to
initiate as the blades encounter too much resistance. This
wastes energy and increases the chances of wear and tear.
Adjust the blade angles accordingly.
6. RPM
This is a standard for the measurement of the speed of the
fan in revolutions per minute. Depending on the type and
sophistication of the appliance, some fans come with a
remote control, increasing your ability to manipulate their
efficiency. You can control the speed of revolutions to
enhance comfort and control airflow to an agreeable point.
For example, during warmer weather, you need rapid
revolutions to create a cool environment. Exercise caution
as too high RPM's will consume too much of your power.
Managing the airflow and reducing fan noise will depend on
the specific set of conditions at a point.
7. Maintenance
To keep your airflow at an optimal level, you need to carry
out regular maintenance practices on its parts. While
cleaning, you can disassemble the whole unit to check and
replace any broken blades. Follow the directions on cleaning
blades that come with the warranty and always place your
blade on a dust free area, taking care to label the upper
and lower sides. This action prevents confusion when
screwing the blades back on. You can use a piece of wet
cloth for thorough cleaning. Do it gently so as not to risk
leaving marks.
Every time you clean one blade, rinse the piece of cloth and
move along to the next blade with the clean cloth. If you
have cleaned the fan recently, vacuuming it will be more
than enough. When the blades dry, screw them back on.
There are several ways of managing your ceiling fan to
ensure a good flow of air and reduce the electricity bill at
the same time. However, the most important part about a
ceiling fan is the buying. When you go hunting for fans, you
need to pay particular attention to blades. Even though big
blades are good, big does not always translate into
efficient, as there are other factors involved. It is good
for the blade to be big but it is also important to look at
the design .Some have a good tilt, others are too heavy
while yet others wear out too easily. The fan motor controls
the revolutions of the blades. Look at the motor before
purchase. Motors that are cast in aluminium die are
efficient last longer than those that do not. |
